Women's Health Issues
Instructions for Authors

Women's Health Issues is the official Journal of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health. It publishes reports and papers from conferences and workshops sponsored by the Institute, as well as appropriate position papers, with solicited commentary.

Unsolicited manuscripts addressing topics relating to women's health issues, as outlined in the Mission Statement of The Jacobs Institute-printed in the front pages of the Journal- are welcome.

Manuscripts may be accepted for publication subject to peer review, space availability, appropriateness to the purposes of the Journal, and the range of issues under discussion.

Manuscript Requirements
In general, manuscripts should contain 750-2,000 words. They must be typed, double-spaced, on one side only of 8-1/2-x-11-inch paper with 1-inch margins an all sides. Pages must be numbered consecutively in the upper right- hand corner. An original and two copies must be submitted.

The first page must list the title, author(s) with major academic degrees, institution's name, city and state, sources of financial support (if necessary), and corresponding author's address and phone and fax numbers.

The second page must include an abstract no longer than 100 words. Abstracts that exceed 100 words will be edited for length.  The abstract should follow the genral organization: purpose, data/information, conclusion.

Tables, Graphs, Illustrations
Any tables or illustrations must provide information not duplicated in the text and have fully descriptive legends. For illustrations, the author must provide two sets of unmounted glossy photographic prints less than or equal to5x7 inches.

Bars on charts and graphs must be distinguished from each other by crosshatching and ink patterns, not by shades of gray, which often become indistinguishable during the production process. If no distinction between the bars is necessary, solid gray shading may be used; however, screens of gray (ie, dot patterns) cannot be reproduced well and therefore cannot be used.

Tables and graphs must be submitted on separately numbered pages that follow references.

References must be submitted on a separately numbered page following the manuscript text and must adhere to the specifications of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. (This document can be obtained from the American College of Physicians by contacting the society's web page at http://www.acponline.org) References must be numbered sequentially according to the order in which they appear in the text.

References to journal articles must include authors' names (up to seven), article title, journal title abbreviation (see Index Medicus), year and volume number, and page range.

References to newspaper articles must include authors (up to seven), article title with section, page and column numbers, newspaper name and date of publication:

Footnotes may not be used. Authors are advised to incorporate information as they consider to be footnote material into the text or omit it entirely.

Computer Disks
Authors are encouraged to submit a 3-1/2 HD/DD computer disk to the editorial office.  Please observe the following criteria.  Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper for acceptance and review.  When your manuscript has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy.  The reference section, figure captions, and abstract must be within the same file as the manuscript on the disk.  Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly.  In the event that a disk cannot be converted, the hard copy version will be used.  Specify what software was used (e.g., WordPerfect 6.1, XyWrite, etc.).  Specify what computer was used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.).  The article file should include all textual material (tect, references, figure captions, etc.).  Final revised figures and tables should be included with the final revised hard copy of the article. Be sure to keep a back-up disk for reference and safety. 

Letters to the Editor

Two types of correspondence will be considered for publication:

1. A brief letter commenting on and directly relating to an article that has appeared in the Journal.

2. A brief letter commenting on or calling attention to an issue worthy of further discussion.

The editor reserves the right to shorten letters and make minor editorial revisions. Only a selection of letters submitted will be published.

Each and every author must sign the following statement, which is to be submitted with the manuscript:

"I certify that this material has not been published previously and is not under consideration by another journal. I further certify that I have had substantive involvement in the preparation of this manuscript and am fully familiar with its content."
